These melt in your mouth simple homemade biscuits are made with the most delicious flaky buttery layers. They can be made in under 20 minutes and are the best side to any dinner, soup or morning breakfast sandwich.
I absolutely love biscuits. While I was a leader on a mission trip to West Virginia, the woman who hosted our church made the worlds best Southern Style Biscuits I had ever eaten. The biscuits were made for almost all our meals and each bite was better than the next.
Ever since that trip I have been obsessed with homemade biscuits.
When my hubby and I visited Nashville, TN for my 30th Birthday weekend I was determined to find the best biscuits Nashville could give us. We hit up several Mom and Pap restaurants in search of the best biscuits. And they all delivered!
I just love a good biscuit and the south does it right!
These Simple Homemade Biscuits have been my go to for over 6 years. They are foolproof to make. They’re filled with layer upon layer of flaky goodness. Crispy outside and buttery inside–there is so much to love!

How to Make Simple Homemade Biscuits
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, honey and salt.
Shred butter stick on a cheese grater. This helps distribute the butter throughout the whole biscuit.
Next cut in the butter with a pastry blender until butter is about pea sized. Mixture will be crumbly.
Stir in milk until mixture is just combined and there is no more dry flour.
Add a thin layer of flour or oil to your surface and add dough to greased surface. Grease rolling pin and roll dough out to 3/4 inch thick.
Divide dough into thirds and stack on top of each other. Using a bench scraper cut dough down the center to make 2 halves. Stack one on top of the other and press dough down. Continue this halving and stacking process several times. This is making the layers for the biscuits and you won’t be disappointed with your extra effort.
After creating the layers, using your Rolling Pin roll biscuits out to 3/4 of an inch thick.
Using a 2 or 3 inch Biscuit Cutter, cut dough as many times as you can. Place cut dough onto parchment lined cookie sheet. Gather dough scraps and roll back out continuing to cut biscuits until all the dough is used.
Bake at 450 degrees F for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
Try this variation: Cheddar and Garlic Herb Biscuits
Add 2 Tablespoons minced fresh or dried herbs (I love chives) and 1 tsp garlic powder to the flour, honey and baking powder before cutting in the butter. After butter is cut in add 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese to the batter then add the milk and mix everything together. Follow the recipe to bake.
Add Honey Butter “Frosting”
As if these biscuits weren’t perfect enough, try adding some honey butter to them. It’s buttery sweetness mixed with some warm cinnamon– it’s basically frosting for your biscuits.
- 1 stick softened Butter
- 3 Tablespoons Honey
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla
Leave butter on the counter for an hour to soften. In small bowl combine butter, honey, cinnamon and vanilla. Mix until well combined and add back to fridge. Slather a large amount to warm biscuits, and thoroughly enjoy. You’re welcome 😉
